White Mountain Petroglyphs, Rock Springs, Wyoming

The White Mountain Petroglyphs in Wyoming is a broad display, more than a dozen panels containing hundreds of figures of ancient art. It’s a mural of sorts, and some of the artwork dates back a thousand years. It’s the work of artists from the Great Basin Native American people and Plains Indians, created here more than a thousand years ago. And artists from the Shoshone Nation added to the display, carving into the soft sandstone wall some 200 years ago.

This brilliant display is located about 24 road miles northeast of Rock Springs, and of course, it’s a wall is a small face of White Mountain. There are carvings of the mighty bison and elk. And the drawings of horses at full-gallop were etched during the 16th century. Among the treasure of ancient artwork are drawings of Indian headdresses, and a very prominent human footprint. And some of the most interesting, and unusual, pieces on the rock canvas depict animals within animals. Those drawings support the theory that the site was a birthing-place for the Plains and Great Basin Native American people. The handholds are still very much in evidence, worn in the stone to help generations of Native American artists grip the sandstone wall.

The White Mountain Petroglyphs are also home to raptors that nest in the cliff, but it’s the historic artwork that is the Wonder here. It’s a spectacular ancient Native American studio of art, that is still very much a sacred place.
