This is a place like no other. The Old West Wax Museum is really the Old West Wax Museum and Dancing Bear Folk Center, and more. It’s located right there on State Highway 20 that runs through downtown Thermopolis, Wyoming. It’s true that the Hot Springs are the main attraction here in Thermop, but a lot of sightseers and tourists make it a point to stop at the Old West Wax Museum when in Hot Springs County.
The Old West Wax Museum provides an interesting and historical look at Frontier Wyoming. The wax figures here were created by Kenneth Bunn, who would become more well-known for his bronze sculptures of Western wildlife. But here, immortalized in wax, you’ll see nearly 100 famous figures of the Old West, upstairs in the two-story building. Such notables as Butch Cassidy, Chief Washakie, and Jim Bridger grace the museum. And downstairs, there is a remarkable collection of teddy bears in the Teddy Bear Den. There are 500 teddy bears, many arranged in historical settings, and many soft-sculpture teddy bears adorned in garb representing countries all over the world. And there’s the Textile Studio here at the Old West Wax Museum, with wonderful displays of quilts, looms, spinning wheels, and early sewing machines.
The museum also offers-up an incredible collection of historic newspapers and pioneer printed etchings. And there’s an amazing display of historic documents that include photographs and maps that date back to 1772.
It quite a tour through frontier Wyoming, so give yourself plenty of time to take it all in when you visit the Old West Wax Museum and Dancing Bear Folk Center.
