Best Areas of Stockholm to Stay 2024
If you’ve been to Stockholm, Sweden’s city known for its natural beauty, colorful canals, and tourist attractions, you’re probably familiar with the city’s settlement. But, if you’re visiting this lovely city for the first time, don’t be alarmed. I will provide very detailed information about accommodation in this beautiful city of the country, which is the center of culture, politics, economy, and arts, throughout the article where to stay in Stockholm.
Throughout the article, I will provide a list of Stockholm hotel recommendations for every budget, with a focus on Stockholm city center hotels and accommodation areas.
Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and largest city, is made up of 14 islands linked by 50 bridges and is not particularly large. More specifically, despite the city’s size, the number of tourist accommodations is limited.
The remainder of my article contains hotel recommendations for every budget. For those who are pressed for time, here are some quick hotel recommendations:
- 3 ★★★ Central Hotel – Clean and relatively economical close to the transportation network,
- 4 ★★★★ Collector’s Victory Hotel, close to the Old Town Square and the metro,
- Close to attractions, luxurious and quality 5 ★ Sheraton Stockholm Hotel.
Best Area to Stay in Stockholm
There are 4 main regions where you can stay in Stockholm. These:
- Norrmalm, the new center of the city, the heart of transportation and shopping,
- Gamla Stan, known as the Old City and home to many sightseeing spots,
- Östermalm, which is a slightly more elite part of the city and attracts attention with its beautiful beach,
- Södermalm, which contains the most stylish cafes of Stockholm.
Norrmalm
Gamla Stan, the Norrmalm region to the north of the Old City, is my first regional recommendation. This area has many 4-5 star hotels because it is Stockholm’s business and financial center.
The Central Train Station and the Intercity Bus Terminal are two of Norrmalm’s most notable features. Norrmalm will be your first stop in the city, whether you’re taking the high-speed train Arlanda Express from the airport to the train station or the airport bus Flygbussarna to the bus station.
Those who stay in this region will have no trouble with urban transportation. You can walk to the places to see in Stockholm from here, and if you don’t want to walk, you can easily travel around the city by taking one of the metro lines that run through the area. This area contains the majority of the city’s shopping centers. While Gallerian is the largest shopping mall in the region, Drottninggatan is one of the city’s most well-known shopping streets.
Norrmalm, which is surrounded by important tourist attractions such as the Royal Opera House and the National Museum, is also known for its design shops, nightclubs, and restaurants.
The northern part of Norrmalm is known as the settlement, and there are mostly cheap hotels. It is known as the modern center of the city. The southern part is known as “The City,” and it is walkable to many places, particularly Gamla Stan.
In a nutshell, this is my first suggestion for those wondering where to stay in Stockholm. If you want to stay in a place where you can easily reach your hotel from the airport, where you can easily reach many important sightseeing spots by walking or by metro, and where there are many eating, drinking, and shopping opportunities, Norrmalm is the right choice.
Norrmalm Hotel Recommendations
3 ★★★ Central Hotel:
Booking.com rating 8,8. Great location.
4 ★★★★ Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel
Booking.com rating 9.0.
4 ★★★★ Downtown Camper by Scandic
Booking.com rating 9.1. A modern facility within 8 minutes walking distance to the train station.
5 ★★★★★ Sheraton Stockholm Hotel
Booking.com rating 8,6. A quality facility close to the train station and 5 minutes walking distance to Gamla Stan.
Gamla Stan (Old Town)
The second region is Gamla Stan, or the Old City. This neighborhood is ideal for those who want to be in the heart of the city, surrounded by old and colorful buildings and narrow and charming cobblestone streets.
The Royal Palace, Stockholm Cathedral, Riddarholmen Church, and the Nobel Museum are all located in this area, which is centered on the iconic Stortorget Square.
Many places are easily accessible on foot from Gamla Stan, which is located between Norrmalm and Södermalm. Those who do not wish to walk can take advantage of the two nearby metro stops. In addition, ferry services from the Old City to Djurgarden Island, where the Vasa Museum is located, are available.
You can walk for 10-15 minutes from the airport to the hotels in the Old City, or take the metro from inside the train station and get off after 1 stop.
This area, which draws attention with its colorful houses, historical buildings, cafes, and shopping shops, is naturally the city’s most touristic point. This situation has resulted in two situations. The first is that hotels in the area are more expensive than in other areas. Another issue is that many places are extremely crowded, particularly during the day.
Gamla Stan (Old City) Hotel Recommendations
3 ★★★ Hotel Sven Vintappare:
Booking.com rating 9.0.
A charming hotel in the heart, heart of Gamla Stan, in an early 17th century building.
4 ★★★★ Collector’s Victory Hotel:

4 ★★★★ Collector’s Lady Hamilton Hotel:
Booking.com rating is 8.7.
A good option for those looking for a quality place around the Old City.
Östermalm
Another place to stay in Stockholm is Östermalm, which is located northeast of the old city. Ostermam, the city’s largest region in terms of land area, stands out for its modern lifestyle. This area, which is mostly preferred by the city’s upper crust, has the most expensive and luxurious bars and restaurants.
Stureplan Square is the epicenter of the region’s most important nightlife and luxury shopping districts. This neighborhood is already well-known for its shopping, dining, and entertainment options. However, these facilities in the region are significantly more expensive than in other areas.
Östermalm is a location with easy access to public transportation. You can walk here in 15-20 minutes from Norrmalm, where the central train station is, or you can take the metro or municipal buses.
Even if you are not staying in Östermalm, from which you can easily reach many important sightseeing attractions such as the Vasa Museum, Gröna Lund, and Skansen, you should come here and walk along the waterfront.

5 ★★★★★ Hotel Diplomat:
Booking.com rating 8.9.
A 5-star quality hotel in an impressive Art Nouveau style building dating from 1911.
Södermalm
With its vibrant nightlife, vintage shops, hipster bars, and chic restaurants and cafes, Södermalm is by far Stockholm’s most appealing district.
This area, known as Söder for short, is located in the southern part of Gamla Stan and has a variety of quality facilities ranging from aparthotels to luxury and boutique hotels.
The majority of Stockholm’s more than 50 museums are concentrated in this area. Fotografiska is the most well-known. Other city attractions are located a little further away from this area. Those outside of the Old Town, particularly those on Djurgarden Island, may be a little further away, but you can easily reach most places by subway if you prefer.
After arriving at the central station or bus terminal from the airport, simply take the metro line to the station and exit after two stops to reach your hotel in the area.
Götgaten Street is one of the most well-known streets in this area. This street is lined with chic cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. Sofo is another well-known destination in the area. This is also a location that shoppers should not overlook. In addition to vintage shops, the area has hipster bars and stylish cafes.

Final Word on Stockholm Hotels
In recap, there are four main neighborhoods in which to stay in the city. Norrmalm is a shopping and entertainment hotspot. Furthermore, the central train station and the intercity terminal are located here, allowing you to travel from the airport to your hotel in comfort.
Many historical buildings can be found in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, or Old City. Hotel rooms are small and expensive.
Ostermalm is a luxurious and beautiful neighborhood, while Sodermalm is known for its chic cafes. After all, if I return to Stockholm, I’d like to stay in Norrmalm, as I did the last time.
In Stockholm, the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel is an excellent choice. You can be very comfortable in transportation while traveling around the city after arriving at the airport.
Except this; 3 ★★★ Central Hotel in Norrmalm draws attention with its being both a central and economical hotel. 5 ★★★★★ Sheraton Stockholm Hotel is one of the best options for those who want to stay in this area but do not have any problems with their accommodation budget. If you want to stay in Gamla Stan, the historical center of the city, 4 ★★★★ Collector’s Victory Hotel is a nice option.
