Looking for a relaxing getaway this weekend? Richmond may just be your cup of tea. In addition to a wealth of interesting museums and historical sites, this beautiful city has evolved itself as a destination for craft beer and eateries. Whether you are looking for some cultural immersion, craft beer indulgence, or natural sightseeing, there are always things to do in Richmond Virginia this weekend.
Visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
When it comes to attractions in Richmond, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts always makes it to the top of the list. Opened in 1936, it’s one of the largest art museums in North America. The VMFA has more than 33,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of world history. Its collections of art nouveau, art deco, English silver, Fabergé, and the art of South Asia are among the finest in the nation.
Since the museum is so large, you can easily spend half a day there immersing yourself in art and history. Admission is free, except for some special exhibits and events.
Admire the Virginia State Capitol
Richmond is a place of deep historical significance, as it was heavily involved in the Civil War period. Designed by statesman and philosopher Thomas Jefferson, the Virginia State Capitol serves as a symbol of the period. Many visitors enjoy themselves during a visit here, especially with the help of the knowledgeable guides. Sign up for the free guided tours, which are available from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday to Saturday. On Sunday, free tours are available from 1 to 4 p.m.
Explore Belle Isle
Richmond sits on the impressive James River. Inside the beautiful James River Park System lies the little treasure Belle Isle. This island is surrounded by rocks that have been smoothed by the water. In the summer, many locals flock here to sunbathe on the rocks. You can also find walking trails all over the island and explore the wild woodlands.
Indulge in Craft Beer
In recent years, Richmond has won visitors’ hearts with its breweries. In fact, it’s quickly becoming one of the best craft beer cities in the country. Be sure to check out local breweries like Hardywood, Triple Crossing, and The Veil, which have loyal fans nationwide. There are also many delicious eateries and food trucks, as well as live music nights and special events. You’ll never run out of fun!
Ride a Trolley
In 1888, Richmond was the first place in the world to introduce a trolley system. The trolley system is enclosed and can seat up to 26 people. Trolley tours around the city let you experience Richmond in style. It would be a shame to visit without experiencing the history of this amazing mode of transport.
