Free Attractions in Verona Italy
The city of Verona is renowned for its connections with Romeo and Juliet, with opera and as an expensive place to visit. There are, however, ways of seeing this beautiful place for a fraction of the price if you have a bit of insider knowledge. Here are some top tips for seeing the best of Verona on a budget.
Buy a Verona Card
Most museums and some churches charge an admission fee which adds up. Head to the tourist office and by purchasing a Verona Card which costs 15 Euros for 2 days or 20 Euros for four, access to several of the best museums in the city is included. Admission to the Roman Arena is 6 Euros as is Juliet’s House so by using the Verona Card savings can easily be made. Most attractions are within walking distance too so grab a map and start exploring. There is also a Four Churches Card for combined admission to some of the main churches in Verona.
Visit on the First Sunday of the Month
If your visit is planned to coincide with the first Sunday of the month then several museums are free. This includes the famous Castelvecchio, one of the most famous art museums in Italy. This is an instant way to save money in Verona. There are attractions that are free too. It costs nothing to see Juliet’s Balcony but seeing the historic house with it is an additional charge.
Verona Opera Festival
During June through August, the world-famous Verona Opera Festival is in town. Whilst some seats are very expensive it is possible to buy an unreserved seat high up in the Roman Arena. Queue up with the locals, take a picnic to enjoy during the intervals and see some of the worlds’ best opera sung under the stars.
Piazza del Erbe
The cafes on Piazza del Erbe and by the Arena charge for their location and eating out can be pricey. Check out the streets for superb delis where pizza is sold by the slice, there are lovely open sandwiches, and cakes to die for. In Verona, there are seats in the parks and just by Ponte Nova a picnic area. What more could anyone want than some delicious food with a view across the city?
Roman Amphitheatre
Known as Teatro Romano, this amphitheater is situated in the northeast city of Verona. It has an interesting oval-shaped form that is well known in all Italian old theatres. While you are here, you can feel the interesting atmosphere of the Roman-style fighting. Back in time, this beautiful building was used for gladiator fights, but also as a place of execution for Roman prisoners.
Lamberti Tower
This beautiful tower is the highest building among the Roman relics in Verona. Lamberti Tower, also named Torre Lamberti, dates back to 1463. When entering this tower, you will have to climb 238 stairs to reach the top. When you arrive at the top, you can enjoy the wonderful landscape of Verona.
Juliet’s House
No doubt, this house is the icon of Verona. Here was filmed Romeo and Juliet, a play that was based on the novel by W. Shakespeare. In the yard, at the exact balcony, you can take photos just like Rome and Juliet. Inside the house, you can see a variety of relics of the Renaissance. As a usual tradition, don’t forget to write a letter to Juliet.
Giardino Giusti
A trip to Verona is incomplete without a visit to Giardino Giusti. This is one of the most beautiful parks in Europe. A colorful garden with typical Roman statues, a visit here will certainly make you feel more relaxed. Interesting carved plants are giving a unique look to this park.
