Park City Hot Air Ballooning
Park City is world-famous for its premier skiing and winter activities. What many people may not realize, however, is that this Utah destination offers just as much during the rest of the year as it does in the winter. In fact, one of the biggest and most unforgettable things to do while in Park City is hot air ballooning. With hot air ballooning companies in the town offering excursions for both small and large groups and even a burgeoning hot air balloon festival in the autumn, this is one activity that allows you to see Park City as you have never seen it before. Here’s everything you need to know about this thrilling activity that is fun for the whole family.
Know the Basics
Most hot air balloon adventures in Park City happen during sunrise, as this is when the air is coolest and the winds are most favorable. Not only is a sunrise flight more practical in Utah, but it also gives you spectacular views of the sun peaking over the mountain peaks in the east. Because these flights take off early in the morning, it’s a good idea to have lodging in Park City booked for the evening before. Pilots are FAA certified and strict safety protocols make hot air ballooning as safe as it is thrilling. Although you may want a sweater since the mornings can be cool, the differences in temperature between the ground and the maximum altitude that the balloon will reach are actually quite minimal.
Who’s Flying?
There are a number of hot air balloon companies in Park City, including Park City Balloon Adventures, Skywalker, and Morning Star Balloons. Check out each company and find the one that best fits what you and your group are looking for. Some operators, for example, can carry groups of up to 30 people, while others may offer amenities like toast and digital photographs to make the event even more special. Costs vary depending on the company but generally range between $100 and $200 per child and over $200 per adult.
Balloon Festival
You don’t even have to go up in the air to enjoy hot air ballooning in Park City. The town’s Autumn Aloft is a hot air balloon festival that was begun over 30 years ago and which has only recently been revived. With well over a dozen balloons floating up into the blue Utah skies, the Autumn Aloft festival is a great way for pilots to show off their skills and for families to enjoy the view even from the ground. The 2015 event took place towards the end of September, but specific dates for next year’s event have yet to be announced.
Floating high up into the blue sky and enjoying stunning views of Park City and the surrounding mountains is an experience unlike any other. By taking a hot air balloon ride you will be able to experience this world-famous destination in a wholly unforgettable and unique way.
