There may be no vacation that is more exciting than a visit to Jolly Old England, especially if you are planning on spending some time in the capital. London is a great city that has a little something for everyone, with historical buildings, amazing sights, and a host of attractions around every corner. The problem is that taking them all in can end up getting a little pricey, meaning that some of them just might end up being off-limits. That doesn’t mean that you have to sit around in London hotels doing nothing because there are plenty of great things to do that won’t cost you a penny.
Oxford Street
Your first port of call should be the never-ending retail delights on Oxford Street. A shoppers dream, with every major high street brand showcasing their wares as well as more luxury outlets like the iconic Selfridges. If high street isn’t your thing London’s famous markets are just a short tube ride away, visit the quirky Spitalfields, antique haven Portobello Road & for more alternative finds Camden market is always a hit. For shopping fuel, Oxford Street has every eaterie under the sun available within walking distance. From the grab and go likes of Subway, McDonalds, KFC & independent street vendors to The Hard Rock Cafe.
Oxford Street is a great base to start from as you are near and can travel to easily pretty much anywhere in London. One of London’s newest attractions is Ripley’s Believe It Or Not which is a fun-filled ‘museum of oddities’ providing entertainment for both young and old. Be sure to bring a camera, there are lots to be seen and snap!
Watch Changing of the Guard
Chances are you are going to go pay a visit to Buckingham Palace on your trip. Rather than just taking snapshots and hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the members of the Royal Family in the window, you should time your visit to coincide with the changing of the guard. The times vary depending on the location, so check first to make sure that you are at the right place at the right time for this colorful daily event.
Old Bailey
Most times you are forced to watch lawyerly events take place on TV, so why not get a glimpse of the real thing with a trip to the Old Bailey? You can sit in the viewing area where you will see real trials take place, some of which can end up unwittingly taking a turn for the comedic. The Old Bailey is located about 200 yards northwest of St Paul’s Cathedral, just outside the former western wall of the City of London.
Watch a Taping at the BBC
If it’s real comedy you are after, then take a trip down to the BBC where you might just be able to catch a live show being taped. There is a studio tour too, but that, unfortunately, doesn’t fall under the free category.
Covent Garden Market
There are all kinds of free shows to be seen at Covent Garden Market where you may even end up becoming part of the act of the many street entertainers. Come into a world of fresh fruits & vegetables, meats & cheeses, restaurants and a wide variety of specialty shops and services.
Camden Market
Outdoor markets are actually a big part of the whole London scene, with Camden Market perhaps being the most famous. It’s a great place to simply browse, or even get into a little haggling if you do want to make a purchase.
Harrods
If you’d rather see how the other half shops, then you might want to take a little wander around Harrod’s, although try not to break anything when you browse, as it just might cost more than your total vacation. Harrods is the world’s most famous department store with the latest men’s and women’s designer fashion, luxury gifts, food, and accessories.
Piccadilly Circus
Sometimes it’s fun to just take a little time to sit back and watch the world pass you by, and there may be no better place to do that than at Piccadilly Circus. By day you can watch the crowds roll by, and at night you can bask in the glow of the bright neon signs.
Trafalgar Square
Another great place to hang out is at Trafalgar Square where, with a bag of seeds, you can meet some fine feathered friends who will be happy to hop on your arms and pose for a picture or two.
Hyde Park
Getting back to nature can also be done at Hyde Park which may very well be one of the most beautiful spots in the city.
Westminster Abbey
The city of London is one of the most picturesque in the world and is home to architecture that can leave you breathless. If you want to see one of the most remarkable places up close and personal, then take a visit to Westminster Abbey, and while it may be free to worship, you can show a little appreciation by leaving a small donation.
