10 Best Cyprus Beaches on the East Coast
The East coast of Cyprus is renowned for its stunning beaches, and it’s easy to see why. From Larnaca Bay, all the way to Ayia Napa and Protaras, the crystal-clear waters and sandy shores are a true paradise. With warm temperatures and balmy breezes year-round, it’s the perfect destination for a summer holiday – or any other time of year.
The coastal winds can be incredibly unpredictable at times, often changing direction in the blink of an eye. During the summer months, the predominant wind is usually a gentle sea breeze, blowing from the west. Away from the coastline, the wind tends to come from the southwest but closer in, it follows the contours of the shoreline. Meanwhile, during the wintertime, there may be some northerly winds early in the morning, before switching to the west later on in the day.
Be aware that there can also be sea fog in certain areas during the summer months, which may reduce visibility to less than a mile. This usually lifts by midday and is replaced with desert winds, which bring dust to the region. Keeping all this in mind, you’re sure to have a safe and enjoyable stay at any of the beautiful beaches along Cyprus’ East coast.
Here is a list of the 10 best beaches we thought are worth visiting, in the Famagusta district of Cyprus.
Makronissos Beach
Makronissos Beach is undoubtedly one of the most stunning beaches in Cyprus, and it’s an absolute must-see for anyone visiting this beautiful island. This was the last beach I tried and it is probably a good thing because I would have come here every day otherwise! White sand, beautiful crystal, clean, blue water. I felt like I was back in the Caribbean. I was told that during peak season this beach is impossible to enjoy due to the sheer number of people but I was lucky, having visited in early September and I really loved it.
Located on the eastern side of the Akamas Peninsula, Makronissos Beach boasts clear turquoise waters surrounded by luscious greenery and soft white sand. The beach is accessible only by a dirt road, making it relatively untouched and secluded – perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking with friends.
What is available: A huge kiosk where you will be able to order food, coffee (frappe & espresso), drinks, magazines, and even beach rackets!
Green Bay
A great bay in Protaras and small which is part of this beach’s charm. This beach is a little tricky to find because it is located to the right of the Cavo Maris hotel, which is only (approx) 100 meters away and you need to get ‘off road’ to reach the parking to this beach.
The bay itself is framed by a rocky, rugged coastline, making it a romantic and picturesque location with plenty of opportunities for exploration. The waters are incredibly calm, making it ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and snorkeling.
Cavo Maris has its own beach which is also quite small but has various amenities. The ‘real’ Green Bay is much smaller and there is only a small shack where to buy water, frappe, and soft drinks. No food or showers unless you head towards the hotel.
If you’re looking for a more active experience, the bay offers plenty of great spots for fishing. In addition, there’s a nearby bird sanctuary that’s teeming with wildlife, offering visitors breathtaking views of the landscape and a chance to observe various species of birds.
What is available: A small shack where you will only find drinks such as water, frappe, and soft drinks (cheap too!). A diving school is also available.
Sirena Beach
Sirena Beach / Sirena Bay is a true gem, not so much for the beach but also for the awesome little bar/restaurant they have here. Don’t get me wrong, the water is still very clean but there is no beach per se. Just walk down the steps and jump in the water. A very cool little place to visit with friends and enjoy around 6 pm for that final dip of the day and finish it all off with a beer or a cocktail.
No trip to Sirena Beach would be complete without sampling some of the amazing seafood dishes that are available; from succulent calamari to freshly caught fish, you won’t be disappointed!
What is available: bar/restaurant.
Sunrise Beach
Sunrise Beach is a famous beach in the Protaras/Paralimni area. This is an ideal beach for families and couples alike, who simply want to relax at the beach, while also having all the necessary amenities readily available.
Due to its remote location, Sunrise Beach is an ideal spot for a romantic getaway or a day trip with friends. The area is well maintained and low on crowding, which allows visitors to really soak up the beauty of the surrounding Mediterranean landscape in peace.
As with all the beaches in Cyprus owned by the council, each sun bed costs 2.50EUR and the umbrella 2.50EUR for the whole day. Not bad considering that in many places in Italy, for all these amenities you would be paying no less than 10.00EUR per sun bed and another 5.00EUR for the umbrella. Do not let all the amenities fool you – this is a popular beach and can get quite busy but it is still rather relaxing!
What is available: From ‘peripteros’ (small supermarkets where you can find almost anything that is open until late at night) to restaurants, kiosks, and more. Here you will also find some great water sports to try as well. You can find these on most beaches but we found these to be the ‘safest’ and most looked after.
Nissi Beach
Nissi Beach is the quintessential party beach of Cyprus. Here, visitors can expect an upbeat atmosphere marked by loud music, plenty of people, and bustling bars for entertainment. Wednesdays and Sundays are particularly special occasions as the beach plays host to foam parties – a highlight not to be missed!
Aside from its social scene, Nissi Beach is known for its range of water sports facilities and activities. Guests can try out parasailing, jet skiing, banana boat rides, and more. Adventure seekers can even partake in cliff jumping from the rock on the right side of the beach, which can be easily accessed through shallow waters. Although I haven’t personally tried it myself, I have heard that it is quite an exhilarating experience!
What is available: As with Sunrise Beach, here you will find it all, peripteros to restaurants, kiosks, and more.
Blue Lagoon (El Greco)
The Blue Lagoon is an exquisite hidden anchorage that will take your breath away. It is located on the east coast of Cyprus, and can be reached by boat from Ayia Napa or Protaras. Once you get there, it’s easy to see why this little alcove has become one of the most popular anchorages in Cyprus.
The crystal clear water offers a stunning backdrop that invites visitors to explore its depths and marvel at the beautiful fish and coral beneath the surface. But it is also an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, or simply lounging around on the sandy beach.
The area surrounding the Blue Lagoon is also stunning, with rocky terrain and rugged cliffs providing a spectacular view. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking, as well as cafés and restaurants nearby for those looking for a bite to eat or a cool drink.
Konnos Beach
Konnos Beach is an idyllic paradise east of Ayia Napa. Set within a dramatic cliff landscape, this beach is renowned for its crystalline waters and mesmerizing shades of blue. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil family holiday spot or a bustling snorkeling adventure, Konnos Beach has something for everyone.
With its calm waters and inviting sand dunes, it’s the perfect place to kick back and relax. But be warned – once you’ve experienced the magic of Konnos Beach, it may be hard to leave!
Vyzakia Beach
Vyzakia Beach is a perfect spot for beachgoers looking to enjoy some peace and quiet. Located near Nissia, this secluded bay boasts soft golden sands and crystal-clear waters that are ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Not only is Vyzakia Beach the ideal destination for relaxation but it’s also located near a Neolithic settlement, providing further opportunities to explore the history and culture of Cyprus. For those who seek a truly immersive experience, Vyzakia Beach offers a unique combination of stunning natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Fig Tree Beach
Fig Tree Beach has been rated one of the best beaches in Europe for its natural beauty and seclusion. Despite being relatively unknown, it is definitely worth a visit. You can relax on the white beach with a book or take part in activities like paddleboarding and kayaking. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even trek up the nearby hill to explore ancient ruins. There are plenty of restaurants and bars near the beach, making it perfect for an afternoon of relaxation or a night out with friends.
Fireman’s Beach
Kapparis Beach (or Fireman’s Beach) is a stunning beach located in the northern part of Protaras. This picturesque stretch of sand features crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming, as well as a variety of activities to keep beachgoers entertained.
Aptly nicknamed “the Fireman”, the outpost provides medical aid and assistance to those who need it, giving beachgoers peace of mind when they visit. With its breathtaking beauty, lush surroundings, ample amenities, and knowledgeable staff, Kapparis Beach is an ideal destination for anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable beach experience.
Where to Stay
I stayed at Mon Repos Hotel Apartments for 5 nights which I booked using booking.com. Our overall stay was good, the staff was amazing and it is right next door to my favorite beach, Makronissos! Towels changed and room cleaned daily. The only negative was that breakfast was not included and was an extra 9.00EUR per day but after the first try, I opted for getting supplies from the supermarket (right across the street) and having breakfast in the apartment.
Recommended: YES. I would suggest you also ask for one of the apartments on the second floor (steps) as they have a nice big balcony. Great for enjoying a glass of Tsiakkas or Petritis wines.
I also stayed 2 nights at the Makronisos Village. This was also booked via booking.com. This is a Village in the true sense of the word, as it is huge and ideal if looking for an inexpensive place to stay for you and a group of friends (each with their own apartment of course). Great value for money but very much a ‘Club Med’ with on-site entertainment. Do not expect luxury and the rooms are a little outdated but still great for a well-priced stay in Agia Napa.
Recommended: YES. For a short stay and for families or friends looking for a place to hang out. Also very close to Makronissos beach.
How to Get There
The only way to get to these beaches or around Cyprus for that matter, is by car. I used rentalcars.com for this trip and hired via SIXT at the price of 35.00 EUR per day (including full insurance).
I purchased the full coverage and am glad we did because the bottom of our car got scratched and rentalcars.com paid it all back thanks to the coverage (119.00EUR). The guy at SIXT told us that this is a common occurrence in Cyprus as many cars are made very low while the sidewalks and parking ‘bricks’ put in place to help you know when to stop, are very high, and under the car scratches happen all the time.
