The state of Arkansas boasts a number of great attractions just begging to be explored. But sightseeing in Arkansas not always involves spending money. In fact, Arkansas offers many fun things to do which are absolutely free.
Arkansas State Capitol
For a glimpse into history consider exploring the Arkansas State Capitol (500 Woodlane Street, Little Rock). You will learn about the history of Arkansas state government and even tour the historic building that dates back to 1915. The cost of the construction is around $2.3 million. Free guided tours are offered weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Visit the Arkansas Arts Center
Did you know that you can attend the Arkansas Arts Center for free? The museum doesn’t charge the admission fee so anyone can get closer to fine art and see a rich collection that includes sculptures, paintings and more. The museum is closed on Mondays and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (9th and Commerce, Little Rock)
The Pillow Thompson House
You can spend the day touring the historic Pillow Thompson House constructed in 1896. The beautiful building is a great example of Queen Anne style, with pedimented porches, asymmetrical facade as well as round, square, and polygonal towers. The historic house is open for visitors Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (718 Perry Street, Helena)
Have a Walk Along the Riverfront
Walk along the Arkansas River at Riverfront Park where you can see outdoor art installations, a children’s playground and historic markers. (1 Riverfront Drive, Little Rock)
Visit the Delta Cultural Center
At the Delta Cultural Center you can learn about the historic events that took place in Arkansas during the Civil War as well as the state’s rich heritage of blues and gospel music. The Delta Cultural Center is currently located in the restored depot in Helena, 141 Cherry Street.
Rapps Barren Settlement
To see how people lived in Arkansas in the middle of the 19th century make sure you visit Rapps Barren Settlement located at Cooper Park 1101 Spring Street, Mountain Home. The historic structures include old cabins, a shotgun-style home and a school.
Calico Rock Museum
History lovers will be thrilled to see rare exhibits displayed at the Calico Rock Museum and Visitor Center (104 Main Street, Calico Rock). The museum features items that cover a vast period of time from the prehistoric era up to 1967.
Take a Scenic Drive
Take in jaw-dropping views of the Talimena National Scenic Drive that passes through the Ouachita National Forest. The route begins on U.S. 71 in Mena and will take you into Oklahoma (see also 5 Scenic Drives & Road Trips Through Arkansas).
Visit a War Hero
Stroll through the one-acre Herman Davis State Park to see the statue of a war hero. The statue honors Private Davis who served as a scout and sharpshooter during World War I. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Croix de Guerre, and Medaille Militaire for his outstanding military service.
Outdoor Art
Stroll along the Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden to see 70 outdoor sculptures that are worth more than $2 million. But you can see them for free! The Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden is situated north of the Little Rock Marriott Hotel.
