Granger Lake is just north of Taylor, Texas, between Austin and Waco.
The dam is located on the San Gabriel River. The surface area is 4,009 acres and the maximum depth is 50 feet. The US Army Corps of Engineers operates four parks on the shores of Granger Lake: Friendship Park, Taylor Park, Willis Creek Park, and Wilson H. Fox Park.
Attractions
Granger Lake is dominated by flooded willows, stumps, and laydowns. Generally speaking, it is a very shallow tank with muddy water. The parks along the shore provide campgrounds, restrooms, picnic areas, boat ramps, and shoreline fishing opportunities. An entrance/boat ramp fee is charged at all USACE parks.
The San Gabriel Wildlife Management Area provides a one-lane boat launch for Jon boats and canoes only. Adequate parking is available free of charge. There is also bank access to the San Gabriel River above Granger Lake off County Road 348. Parking is restricted to the paved shoulder, and the path down to the river is very steep.

Recreational Activities include Boating, Camping, Fishing, Hiking, Hunting, Picnicking, Water Sports, and Wildlife Viewing
Climate
Texas is a huge state with varying climates but generally, the climate could be said to be primarily hot and humid in the summer months and mild to cool in the winter. Western Texas receives very little rainfall with the exception of the higher elevations. This is the driest area of the state having a relative humidity of 50 percent and an annual rainfall average of eight inches. Eastern Texas experiences hot and humid summers. Temperatures in the metro areas of Fort Worth and Dallas often reach 100 degrees in July and August. This makes for dangerously high heat and uncomfortable for traveling. Winters are pleasant in this region, where the temperatures rarely dip below 32 degrees. Average rainfall in eastern Texas reaches 25 inches or more.
Location
The dam is located 7 miles east of Granger via FM 971 on the San Gabriel River. A map is available above on this page.
A successful white bass fishing trip in my Hobie Pro Angler kayak on the San Gabriel river at Granger Lake. I ended up with 7 keeper white bass, and a surprise guest. A great way to break in my kayak, which I bought in October and have only used twice.
