Some people go on holiday to relax. Others look for a bit of adventure – and Asia has a lot to offer both kinds of traveler. For those looking to experience Asia by foot, and trek their way through beautiful scenery, we’ve gathered some of our favorite countries. Check them out:
1. Thailand
Thailand is a favorite with all backpackers. From unique party experiences such as the full moon parties to iconic film destinations like Maya Beach, it’s a country full of amazing opportunity. It’s also full of surprise, as you might not have known it’s also a great place to go trekking.
Home to spectacular landscapes and great trails, 1Cover’s Thailand guide suggests either exploring the lush tropical rainforests on a jungle trek or meeting the hill tribes who live in the mountains in the north and west of the country. After all the exercise, you’ll deserve a few days on one of the famous party islands.
2. Vietnam
In Vietnam, you can go jungle trekking, mountain hiking, countryside hitch-hiking, walking, and rambling. In other words, there’s a lot of adventure that awaits you. Amongst the most popular trekking spots are Sapa, Phu Luong, Cao Bang, and Cat Ba Island.
3. Nepal
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast who’s up for an epic and adventurous trekking expedition, then, according to Trek Effect, you’ll have dreamed of visiting Nepal. The country is home to the highest and most dramatic mountain landscapes in the world.
Of course, you’ve probably fantasized about conquering Everest and Kathmandu whenever you think of Nepal, but the Annapurna Circuit should be another trail on your list.
4. Bhutan
This landlocked country in South Asia is home to some tough treks. The “longest, highest and reputedly toughest” of which is the snowman trek, according to The Telegraph’s Bhutan guide.
Surprisingly, though, they also add it’s not all that fearsome. Instead, the remote hike is a chance to take in astonishing Himalayan scenery and hopefully observe some of the world’s rarest wildlife – including the snow leopard and Himalayan blue sheep. Other highlights include quaint villages and impressive hillside Buddhist monasteries.
5. Philippines
Next up, we’ve got the Philippines. It’s full of hiking trails, from those friendly to beginners to inspirational achievements. One of the most popular adventure destinations is Mount Pulag. With a peak of 2,922 meters above sea level, it’s an impressive feat – but other trails include Nagkalit-kalit Falls, El Nido, and Mt. Hibok-Hibok, Camiguin.
6. China
Looking for a gentler experience? You should head to The Great Wall of China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stretches more than 5,000 miles through northern China – so pick your favorite spot.
